The Useful Window Sill
How to use a narrow ledge without blocking light.
A window sill invites small objects, but it can become crowded quickly. Keep enough clear space for air to move and for the window to open. A low tray can gather a few items into one visual group, making the ledge easier to clean and less likely to become a storage shelf.
Consider heat and moisture. A radiator below the window can dry plant soil unevenly, while condensation can damage books and wood. Choose objects that tolerate the actual conditions. Ceramics, a small lamp rated for the location, or a hardy plant may fit better than paper.
A clear sill also keeps the view connected to the room. Sometimes the most useful thing it can hold is nothing at all.
